K-3 Intervention

A focus on domain knowledge and motivation

Reach Every Reader’s approach to reading intervention recognizes domain knowledge and motivation as key elements in supporting developing readers. Content-rich instruction forms the basis for school and home-based interventions for all readers in kindergarten through grade three, including potential readers at risk. Our MORE (Model of Reading Engagement) curriculum appeals to individual interests and impacts students’ specific reading, language, and meaning-making needs through texts embedded in science and social studies topics. Primary instructional concepts are identified from Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards, and the C3 (College, Career, Civics) Framework in Social Studies State Standards.

Model of Reading Engagement (MORE)

The MORE Curriculum is a spiral curriculum model. MORE introduces important concepts gradually over time, starting with simpler forms of the concepts and over time, introducing more complex forms. MORE emphasizes the synergistic effect of learning science on both reading motivation and ability in order to foster engaged readers who are motivated to read deeply in school and  home. Short-term instruction focused on basic skills can support students’ reading progress in some aspects of literacy (e.g., word recognition), but a long-term systematic and coherent program of instruction is needed to foster students’ ability to read for understanding and acquire knowledge.

SMART methodology

We use SMART (Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial) design to measure the efficacy of MORE intervention. This methodology allows us to rapidly learn what is–and is not–working for individual learners and integrate changes to the intervention as we learn. This approach helps us maximize the potential for our intervention to help all young readers.

Collaborating with educators

The MORE Program was adopted for use system-wide in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the 18th largest school district in the United States where it is taught to over 30,000 students. Our scaling plan includes working with state education agencies, medium and large urban districts, small districts, and rural schools through education services agencies.
